As a male performer of Middle Eastern Dance and Raks Sharki, Jim Boz is known for his strong presence coupled with masculine grace. It is rare to see a guy in the spotlight, and Jim Boz is not only comfortable, but capable in taking you on a rare journey. Although men performing raks sharki is a bit of a Western phenomenon, there is a strong history of men's dances in the Middle East. Additionally, there are many excellent essays, treatises and documents regarding the roles of male dancing and the movement vocabularies involved. There is no mystical magical 'male technique' for belly dance...there is attitude, presentation, intent and execution.
JIM BOZ WORKSHOPS: Saturday, 3:00 - 4:30PM: Mezza al Sharqi -
Jim serves up a movement mezza of Oriental dance vocabularies in that
inimitable teaching style. Of course, foundations foundations foundations! drills, concepts and technique will be our primary focus as we drift through movements and combinations we can apply to a number of different dance styles and maybe throw a little jazz fusion in there for some extra sass and staging! We will include concepts like variations between dance styles, morphing, texture modulation & sequencing, tips for applications in Choreography, improvisation, energy transfer and character development. Sunday, 3:00 - 4:30 pm: Sassy Combinations: Featuring that oh-so-mind-bending concept of texture morphing, Jim presents an exciting Sassy Combination as performed by members of his student troupe Banat Majnoonaat. Complete the techniques with posture and presentation, with an added discussion on texture sequencing and applying the same progressions in your own choreographies and improvisations with energy transfers and character development. |

Amy Sigil of Unmata: Workshops “UNMATA, The Fast & The Furious” - SATURDAY, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 pm.
This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy will lay down the stylistic foundation and technical breakdown for UNMATA’s awe-inspiring omis, ferocious shimmies, and bad-ass body pops. Each movement will include “transition-training” so it can be used alone or linked with other movements to create a short choreography. UNMATA is known for beat-your-butt drilling and technical obsession, so bring lots of water and come prepared to sweat! “Hot Pot Tribal Fusion” SUNDAY, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 pm. This workshop presents two original tribal style combinations developed by Amy Sigil at Hot Pot Studio in Sacramento, home of UNMATA. Both combinations will include a complete movement and timing breakdown, guidance to nuance development, and ample drilling to engage muscle memory. Geared for improvisational dancers and troupes who depend on a cueing system when performing live, this course will include “transition-training” and lead-change practice. Each combo will begin and end in a tribal-friendly position so that it may be added to your preexisting vocabulary.
Inspired by her experience in American Tribal Style, Egyptian Cabaret, Bharat Natyam, Polynesian dance and more, Amy brings to the stage an innovative dance experience. Amy opened up WORLD (womb of real life dance) Studio in 2002. She has also been feeding creative energy into her solo performance and her troupe, UNMATA, developed in 2003. Amy's charismatic disposition and liquid technique set her style apart from other bellydance forms, throwing a ritualistic and theatrical twist into her interpretation of music through dance. "My vision is to organize a community safe for personal expression, creativity, and growth. My purpose is to provide a home for alternative dance and rhythm.”
Each October Amy Sigil, UNMATA, and Hot Pot Studio host The Blood Moon Regale, a themed weekend of workshops, dance fellowship, and a fully produced showcase of student and professional dancers. The team force of UNMATA is known for extreme choreography layered with inventive movement, and for tapping into an unmistakable divine inebriation on and off stage. UNMATA has spent 2006 performing and teaching workshops cross-country at such events as The Spirit of the Tribes in Ft Lauderdale, Tribal Fest in Sebastopol, Northern Migration in Buffalo, Tribal Café in Los Angeles, and Tribal Quest Northwest in Portland.
